Two Foodies Try Zengo!

Kaitlyn Entry

After a long day of shopping and pampering, Amanda and I decided to try Zengo in Santa Monica. The convenient location made it accessible while wondering through Santa Monica Place. I had been to Zengo once before for happy hour (amazing) and wanted to give it another try.

We decided to try a lunch special called a Bento Box, which consisted of our choice of sushi roll accompanied by Miso Soup and Papaya Salad.  We couldn’t leave Zengo without trying a dessert so we decided to dabble in some Chocolate Banana Cake and Cinnamon ice cream.

The Miso Soup was our starter and was a pleasant surprise! The soup consisted of chipotle, tofu, tomato, wakame, and truffle oil. The spices put a delightful spin on this traditional dish. The tomatoes gave it a more “refreshing” taste and enhanced the chipotle.

Shortly after we finished our soup, the Bento Box arrived.  The Volcano roll is made up of seared salmon, spicy crab, and sesame- chipotle aioli. It was by far one of the best sushi rolls we had ever had. The Sesame- chipotle is the perfect blend of spice and cream for the salmon.

The Papaya salad was an interesting salad that was light, sweet and tangy.

Finally, we reached the best part of the meal: the impeccable Chocolate Banana Cake with cinnamon ice cream. The Chocolate Banana Cake was drizzled in chocolate agave sauce and salted banana caramel. The cake usually comes with ginger ice cream, but we decided to substitute that flavor with cinnamon. The cake was still warm when we received it. It had a light and fluffy texture that gently melted in your mouth. Dessert was definitely our favorite part of the meal!

Zengo definitely received the Two Foodies thumbs up! We enjoyed the atmosphere, the food, and the staff. We loved Zengo and look forward to writing more reviews!

Two Foodies Celebrate Cinco de Mayo!

Amanda Entry:

Sunday was Cinco de Mayo, which meant we had to celebrate by indulging in great Mexican food! We decided to try a spot in Manhattan Beach called Pancho's since we've both heard amazing things about it.

Once we were seated, we were immediately given freshly made tortilla chips with the spiciest salsa I've ever had. Even though I couldn’t feel my mouth after one bite, it was totally worth the burn for the taste.

When we looked at the menu, we were extremely overwhelmed by the amount of options we were given. The menu was filled with greasy, cheesy goodness. After looking at the prices on some of the dishes, which were a bit on the pricey side, we decided to go for the lunch specials: the Cochinito Pibil and the Chimichanga.

The Cochinito is marinated pork with onion, cilantro, lime, and tomatillo sauce.

The Chicken Chimichanga is a flour tortilla filled with chicken and cheese and then deep-fried.

You really can't go wrong with Mexican food and this place was no exception. The Cochinito pork was the perfect combination of spice and marinade while the Chimichanga was deep-fried to perfection.

We definitely have to give this place the Two Foodie seal of approval.
